Spring break on the farm- break? what’s a break?

Well it is spring break and so far this week we have attended a farm conference that was actually a really good network opportunity to meet some of the chefs in town that use local foods in their kitchens.  We ended up speaking with 4 restaurants that we would like to build a working relationship with over time.  We also were given a good bit of information from them about what they look for ingredient- wise and it also gave us a good idea of what folks are looking for in general, so we plant some for them and the rest for our venture.  The really odd thing asked for was Lemon cucumbers- one of my favorites and turns out a chef favorite as well.  Other than the chefs the conference focused on value added food regulations, which if you haven’t looked into are fairly discouraging to anyone starting out but as this is a sue happy society its also necessary to have that knowledge, high grow tunnels and farm innovation grants information sort of rounded the conference out. In all it was very informative.

The rest of the weekend was spent putting receipts in order, sewing and cooking for the usual Sunday night crew.  Today is paperwork day, tomorrow is the fun day- Aquarium in Chattanooga and the zoo; Weds new baby chicks,  farmers market and Mayfield Dairy tour plus we are going to see a friends new Tai Chi studio.  Thursday and Friday are build days for the chicken coop and trenching the goat pen for fencing plus clearing land for the herb garden.  Hand scythes are just not fun but until we can’t afford a tractor yet and can only borrow one periodically so that is the main tool for clearing extra land.  Saturday is the great egg hunt on the farm 🙂 All the kids are looking forward to it and the cooking dinner in the fire pit.  I must be odd but I think it is easier to cook over/in an open fire than on a stove and it tastes better. Sunday a day of celebration, thankfulness and rest.

Really that’s all for today- been a quiet but really busy 2 weeks.

  1. You really make it appear really easy along with your presentation but I to find this topic to be really one thing that I feel I might never understand. It sort of feels too complicated and very vast for me. I am looking ahead on your next put up, I’ll attempt to get the dangle of it!

  2. I have been surfing on-line greater than 3 hours these days, yet I by no means found any attention-grabbing article like yours. It is beautiful value enough for me. In my opinion, if all website owners and bloggers made excellent content material as you did, the net will likely be much more useful than ever before.

  3. Can I clone your article to my blog? Thank you.

    • Thank you for asking but I would like a bit more information before giving any permission such as what is your blog about and how would you credit my article in your blog to me-things along that line- thanks!

  4. 204326 473832Spot on with this write-up, I truly assume this web site needs a lot much more consideration. Ill probably be once much more to read far much more, thanks for that info. 883989
